For the 2022-23 Cleveland Cavaliers’ City Edition uniforms, we partnered with the Cavs and Daniel Arsham to create an identity, uniform and merchandise program that celebrated one of Northeast Ohio’s most treasured landmarks—the Metroparks. Known for its expansive green spaces and scenic waterfronts, the Metroparks are an iconic part of the Northeast Ohio community.
As Cleveland is known by many as THE LAND, we wanted to concept a literal reading THE LAND. Using the plentiful natural resources of the area, from Lake Erie to Cleveland’s abundant farms and agriculture, the City Edition concept combines the natural color palette of the earth to inform the brand language. The color palette was a natural and neutral base with pops of muted Lake Erie blue. From gradients of browns to beiges and blues, the neutral scheme pointed to the inspiration of The Land.
While this uniforms concept and color way might have been unfamiliar to traditional Cavs fans, we combatted this by the integration of references of past brand identities of the Cavaliers. From the 80’s CAVS logo with “V Ball” to the much beloved 90’s black and blue lock up, we felt it was imperative to include these historical references in the uniform.
